Petroleum coke or “petcoke” is a solid material created during petroleum refinement and is distributed via transfer facilities that may be located in densely populated areas. The health impacts from petcoke exposure to residents living in proximity to such facilities were evaluated for a petcoke transfer facilities located in Chicago, Illinois. Site-specific, margin of safety (MOS) and margin of exposure (MOE) analyses were conducted using estimated airborne and dermal exposures. The exposure assessment was based on a combined measurement and modeling program that included multiyear on-site air monitoring, air dispersion modeling, and analyses of soil and surfaces in residential areas adjacent to two petcoke transfer facilities located in industrial areas. Airborne particulate matter less than 10 microns (PM10) were used as a marker for petcoke. Based on daily fence line monitoring, the average daily PM10 concentration at the KCBX Terminals measured on-site was 32 μg/m3, with 89% of 24-hr average PM10 concentrations below 50 μg/m3 and 99% below 100 μg/m3. A dispersion model estimated that the emission sources at the KCBX Terminals produced peak PM10 levels attributed to the petcoke facility at the most highly impacted residence of 11 μg/m3 on an annual average basis and 54 μg/m3 on 24-hr average basis. Chemical indicators of petcoke in soil and surface samples collected from residential neighborhoods adjacent to the facilities were equivalent to levels in corresponding samples collected at reference locations elsewhere in Chicago, a finding that is consistent with limited potential for off-site exposure indicated by the fence line monitoring and air dispersion modeling. The MOE based upon dispersion model estimates ranged from 800 to 900 for potential inhalation, the primary route of concern for particulate matter. This indicates a low likelihood of adverse health effects in the surrounding community.?Implications: Handling of petroleum coke at bulk material transfer facilities has been identified as a concern for the public health of surrounding populations. The current assessment, based on measurements and modeling of two facilities located in a densely populated urban area, indicates that petcoke transport and accumulation in off-site locations is minimal. In addition, estimated human exposures, if any, are well below levels that could be anticipated to produce adverse health effects in the general population.  相似文献

In this paper, we modify dynamic occupancy models developed for detection-nondetection data to allow for the dependence of local vital rates on neighborhood occupancy, where neighborhood is defined very flexibly. Such dependence of occupancy dynamics on the status of a relevant neighborhood is pervasive, yet frequently ignored. Our framework permits joint inference about the importance of neighborhood effects and habitat covariates in determining colonization and extinction rates. Our specific motivation is the recent expansion of the Barred Owl (Strix varia) in western Oregon, USA, over the period 1990-2010. Because the focal period was one of dramatic range expansion and local population increase, the use of models that incorporate regional occupancy (sources of colonists) as determinants of dynamic rate parameters is especially appropriate. We began our analysis of 21 years of Barred Owl presence/nondetection data in the Tyee Density Study Area (TDSA) by testing a suite of six models that varied only in the covariates included in the modeling of detection probability. We then tested whether models that used regional occupancy as a covariate for colonization and extinction outperformed models with constant or year-specific colonization or extinction rates. Finally we tested whether habitat covariates improved the AIC of our models, focusing on which habitat covariates performed best, and whether the signs of habitat effects are consistent with a priori hypotheses. We conclude that all covariates used to model detection probability lead to improved AIC, that regional occupancy influences colonization and extinction rates, and that habitat plays an important role in determining extinction and colonization rates. As occupancy increases from low levels toward equilibrium, colonization increases and extinction decreases, presumably because there are more and more dispersing juveniles. While both rates are affected, colonization increases more than extinction decreases. Colonization is higher and extinction is lower in survey polygons with more riparian forest. The effects of riparian forest on extinction rates are greater than on colonization rates. Model results have implications for management of the invading Barred Owl, both through habitat alteration and removal.  相似文献

Second Life is a virtual, open-access, and user-generated environment that has served as a platform for hosting everything from rock concerts to scientific conferences. Many institutions have also used Second Life as an educational tool, for example by, showcasing scientific exhibits or embedding video and images for learning purposes. Here we discuss the creation and use of an interactive, virtual industrial facility - the Elihu Paper Company - as a way to complement a traditional facility tours in a course in industrial environmental management. Virtual facilities offer a number of educational advantages over real-life ones: they are always open and available for tours, they can be accessed instantaneously from anywhere where there is an adequate internet connection, and most importantly, tours and embedded information can be tailored to specific educational objectives. Our experience in using Elihu Paper as a formal facility visit for the past several years shows that students had significantly more time than usual to ask questions, could and did explore the facility independently, and were still able to produce facility reports that fulfilled the educational objectives of the visits, including mapping material flows and explaining pollution prevention and sustainability opportunities.  相似文献

Chemical cues released by damaged or dead organisms can affect how and where benthic organisms feed. These cues may cause predators to act as opportunistic scavengers in lieu of their normal predatory role. A scavenger, as defined in this study, is an organism that consumes damaged and/or dead organisms. In-situ experiments were performed to determine how the seastar Pycnopodia helianthoides (Brandt) reacts in the presence of chemical cues from one of its prey species, the butter clam Saxidomus giganteus (Deshayes), using both intact and damaged individuals. The results of these experiments suggest that P. helianthoides use their chemosensory abilities to locate damaged/dead prey. The role of current in propagating chemical cues was paramount in this foraging activity. P. helianthoides chose damaged prey over live prey even when live prey was encountered en route to the damaged individual. This study suggests that chemical cues emitted from damaged or dead individuals may cause significant changes in foraging tactics of key predators, thus altering food-web dynamics.Communicated by J.P. Chlorobiphenyls (CBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been determined in the blubber of 17 Atlantic white-sided dolphins stranded at Killala Bay, Co Mayo, Ireland and five from the Scottish coast. The concentrations of the contaminants measured range from 773 to 63,400 microg kg(-1) for sigmaCB and from 160 to 54,600 microg kg(-1) for sigmaDDT. The concentrations of the CBs and OCPs is highly dependent on the age, sex, reproductive state and nutritional condition of the animals in addition to the intake via the food web. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) has been used to study the variation of chemical patterns (data ratioed to CB 153). Immature animals (< 6 years), mature males and primogravid females, and lactating females could be distinguished on the basis of their contaminant patterns. This paper describes the different processes of bioaccumulation and metabolism of organochlorine contaminants (OCs) in this species.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of the late-stage phyllosoma larvae of Panulirus longipes cygnus George and the distribution and densities of the final larval stage, the puerulus, both in the plankton and at settlement along the coast, were investigated. A total of 3,617 late-stage phyllosoma (Stages VI to IX) and 301 puerulus larvae were caught at 187 plankton stations during the July to November periods 1974, 1975 and 1976 off the west coast of Australia between 29°00 to 32°30S and 113°30 to 115°00E. The depth range sampled was 0 to 35 m on the continental shelf and 0 to 90 m off the shelf. During onshore/offshore cruises with similar sampling effort on and off the shelf, 1,169 late-stage phyllosoma larvae were taken, of which only 9 were caught on the shelf, and these near the outer edge. A series of cruises sampling two areas beyond the shelf near 29°30 and 32°00S yielded 2448 late-stage phyllosoma, with greater densities of larvae in the northern location. The settlement of puerulus-stage larvae along the coast in the same geographical range was also greater in the north than in the south. The data from the onshore/offshore cruises showed a definite effect of moon phase on numbers of puerulus larvae caught on the shelf, with higher catches near new moon. The low numbers of puerulus larvae (usually 0, 1 or 2 individuals) caught at all stations showed that the puerulus stage is sparsely distributed in the plankton. Fewer puerulus larvae were present at the surface than at lower depths, but it was not possible to determine a depth preference for the puerulus between 10 m and the lowest depths sampled because of the low catch numbers. No relationships were found between puerulus larvae density and surface-water temperature, salinity, or plankton biomass at each station. Data on the larval distributions indicate that, near the end of their planktonic existence, the majority of the late-stage phyllosoma larvae of P. longipes cygnus are not carried onto the shelf, where mixing of oceanic and continental shelf waters occurs only on the outer third, but are transported southward by oceanic circulation beyond the shelf. The puerulus moults from the last phyllosoma stage beyond the shelf and completes the larval cycle by swimming across the shelf and settling in the shallow reef areas.  相似文献

Chemical pollution of the environment has become a major source of concern. Studies on degradation of organic compounds have shown that some microorganisms are extremely versatile at catabolizing recalcitrant molecules. By harnessing this catabolic potential, it is possible to bioremediate some chemically contaminated environmental systems. Composting matrices and composts are rich sources of xenobiotic-degrading microorganisms including bacteria, actinomycetes and lignolytic fungi, which can degrade pollutants to innocuous compounds such as carbon dioxide and water. These microorganisms can also biotransform pollutants into less toxic substances and/or lock up pollutants within the organic matrix, thereby reducing pollutant bioavailability. The success or failure of a composting/compost remediation strategy depends however on a number of factors, the most important of which are pollutant bioavailability and biodegradability. This review discusses the interactions of pollutants with soils; look critically at the clean up of soils contaminated with a variety of pollutants using various composting strategies and assess the feasibility of using composting technologies to bioremediate contaminated soil.  相似文献
